“Assessment of Professor Renuka Vithal for the title of Doctor Honoris Causa
RV is a world-wide recognized scholar for her strong contribution to the development of critical mathematics education in developing countries. Her unique scholarship has helped illuminating the relationship between the teaching and learning of mathematics and processes of democratization in deeply unequal societies such as South Africa. Her work is gaining momentum not only in the developing world but also in the develop world as discussions on the importance of the teaching and learning of mathematics for social and technological development are central to political and economic processes in global societies. The impact of her work is being seen in publications from a diversity of researchers who build on her scholarship.Besides her research excellence, she has very successfully implemented many of her own theoretical ideas in the processes of change in South African higher education in general, and in the process of democratization of her own university, in particular. She stands out as an educational scholar who bridges research and leadership/innovation practice demonstrates a double quality in being able to illuminate and drive research-based educational change in practice.”
